My Low Carb Diet: Week 1

Ok, so against my will, I started a very low-carb diet this week.  A former client of mine told me to read, Why We Get Fat by Gary Taubes. The author provides some very convincing research on why carbohydrates, are making people fat. I am not currently a proponent of low carb diets like Atkins and South Beach. As a matter of fact, I advise my clients against any “fad diets” and instead, propose that they eat a sensible diet and exercise to make sure they burn more calories than they consume. After all, eating a well balanced diet and exercising has always kept me fit and healthy, that is, until recently.

I had hip surgery 15 months ago and I gained over 30 lbs while recovering in my bed. My diet was out the window and I was not able to walk without pain, much less perform any kind of exercise. About 6 months after surgery I was able to start some moderate exercise and began counting calories. I lost 20 pounds but gained most of it back over the holidays. After the holidays I decided I was done being what I consider over weight, and I started counting calories and exercising vigorously. I only lost 2 pounds in 2 months. Today, I feel stronger, but a layer of fat that I can’t get rid of covers my muscles! So now, I am desperate.

I could never understand how a diet that tells you not to eat fruit could be good for you! But after reading Gary Taubes’ book, I decided I am willing to at least try a low carb diet. I am Italian and foods like pasta and bread are very important to me, so this is going to be tough! I hope there are some other people out there suffering from a low carb diet that can help me get through this. It has been 2 days and I have lost 4 pounds already, and I have 8 more pounds to go. I am still skeptical but trying to keep an open mind.
